If we’re all being honest with ourselves, none of us are as good at maintaining our oral hygiene as we ought to be. Most of us skip flossing every now and then, and who hasn’t gone to bed without brushing their teeth on occasion? While missing the occasional dental hygiene checkpoint isn’t a crime, with enough time, some serious issues can start to develop.

Improper oral hygiene can lead to periodontal disease, which can require surgery. The good news is there’s a fantastic new technology on the market called LANAP which can dramatically improve periodontal surgery. Read on to learn more about this new, minimally invasive procedure.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a fancy way to say gum disease, and it can come in a few different stages. This happens when your gums get infected with bacteria, and if nothing is done, they can destroy the structures that support your teeth.

The first of these stages is gingivitis, which affects only the gums. Later stages can start to affect the tissue surrounding your gums as the disease spreads. In recent years, researchers have started to make connections between periodontal disease and heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and respiratory disease.

How Does Periodontal Surgery Traditionally Work?

Depending on the severity of your periodontal disease, you may need surgery to correct it. These procedures aim to repair the damage done by the disease by using a variety of procedures.

In traditional surgical procedures, your surgeon may lift your gums off your teeth, clean under them, and then stitch them back to fit around the gums. They may also do bone grafting or guided tissue regeneration to deal with damaged bone under your teeth. In some cases, they may need to do tissue grafting, which takes tissue from the top of the mouth and uses it to cover areas where the gums have receded.

What Is LANAP?

LANAP is a form of laser gum surgery that can be a fantastic alternative to traditional surgery. There are a variety of benefits that we’ll talk about in a moment, but let’s start with an overview of how this revolutionary new procedure works.

LANAP does not use a scalpel, sutures, or any cutting of the gums. Instead, the surgeon uses a laser which is able to differentiate between diseased tissue and healthy tissue. It removes the diseased tissue and kills any bacteria living at the site without affecting any of the surrounding healthy tissue.

Pain

In general, LANAP is a much less painful procedure than traditional gum surgery. With traditional procedures, you are recovering from your gums having been cut, lifted away from your teeth, scraped on, and then sutured. This leads to a painful recovery process that requires post-operation pain medication to manage.

Because LANAP involves no cutting, there is little to no pain associated with the recovery process. Patients almost never need pain medication after the procedure. And whereas rest time is a required part of the traditional surgery recovery process, patients who use LANAP can get back to their routines almost at once.

Recession

Gum recession is when the gum line pulls back from your teeth, and it can alter the appearance of your smile. While this can happen with some gum disease naturally, it can also be a result of traditional periodontal surgery. The surgeon has to cut the gum away from the teeth to get to where the tartar is, so there may be some gum recession.

When the gums recede, it exposes the roots of your teeth, which can lead to tooth sensitivity and discomfort eating and drinking. LANAP helps minimize gum recession and keep you healthy and happy. Because it only removes diseased tissue, far more of your natural gum line can remain.

Healing Time

As you might imagine, it takes a while to recover fully from traditional gum surgery. The mouth is a sensitive area, and you have to use it during the recovery period, which prolongs things. It usually takes patients several weeks to recover from these procedures.

LANAP does not involve cutting into the gums, so it does cut down recovery times. There are no incisions or sutures to recovery from, so you’ll be back to normal in no time. The procedure also leaves healthy tissue in place, which helps to promote rapid healing.

Risk of Infection

Your mouth is a dirty place – if you aren’t regular about brushing your teeth, you may have as many as one billion bacteria living on each tooth. This means that any time you have an open wound in your mouth, you have about thirty billion chances to develop an infection, and that’s not counting the bacteria on the surgical tools.

Because LANAP doesn’t create any incisions in the mouth and only uses one tool, your risk of a bacterial infection decrease by a lot. And again, the presence of the healthy tissue around your teeth helps your body fight off any infections which may start to develop after the procedure.

Learn More About Laser Gum Surgery

Oral surgery isn’t an experience any of us look forward to, but with this new technology, it may not be as big an ordeal as it used to be. Lasers are replacing scalpels and reducing pain as well as increasing long-term results. LANAP can help you get your smile back and better than ever in no time.

LANAP laser gum treatment Forest Hills, NY

For years, LANAP® has been FDA-cleared as a dental surgical protocol that is recognized as an alternative to traditional osseous surgery.

Now, LANAP® has been cleared as the only periodontal treatment option with “true regeneration of the attachment apparatus (new cementum, new periodontal ligament, and new alveolar bone) on a previously diseased root surface when used specifically in the LANAP® Protocol.” (As found in FDA filing 510 K-l51763)

We’ve supplied our patients with the LANAP® laser gum disease treatment in Forest Hills, NY for quite some time, but these FDA findings declare what we’ve seen with our own eyes: this advanced laser gum disease treatment not only addresses bacteria and advanced gum disease, but brings about actual regeneration of the tooth’s bone structure itself. This regeneration is what makes LANAP® so powerful.

LANAP® doesn’t just treat the periodontitis at-hand, but rather positions the patient for better, long-term oral health as a result of the regeneration of the bone structure.

We’re excited to share this news with our patients and fellow practitioners.

“The results of the present prospective study compare favorably to clinical data published with various laser protocols and support LANAP therapy as a valid alternative for the treatment of periodontal disease, with the advantages of having a minimally invasive approach.”

Gum Specialist Dr. Prabha Krishnan Preserves Natural Teeth Using Advanced Laser Treatment

Forest Hills, NY — (SBWIRE) — 09/29/2015 — A vast majority of, if not all, Americans would agree that keeping their own set of teeth is a high priority on their to-do list, yet a large number of people in this same category are faced with gum disease which can prevent them from doing so. Whether caused by poor oral health habits, diabetes or underlying medical issues, tobacco use, pregnancy, medication, chronic stress or even lack of access to professional dental cleanings, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half, 47.2% of adults, have some form of gum disease.

Tooth loss occurs when plaque accumulates in the mouth. The bacteria in the plaque eat away the bone that holds the tooth in place causing gum disease which, if left untreated, can result in tooth loss.

There is hope, as Dr. Krishnan explains, and early diagnosis is the key to keeping your teeth. “Patients that want to avoid tooth replacement procedures should seek an evaluation with a board certified Periodontist as soon as any signs or symptoms of gum disease appear. Many patients are not aware that a newer and FDA-approved laser alternative exists that is much more comfortable,” says Dr. Krishnan.

LANAP® (Laser Assisted New Attachment Protocol) is a quick and very effective laser treatment that supports regeneration of bone tissue which is often a vital tool for treating periodontal disease. As a gum surgery alternative, the LANAP® treatment removes periodontal disease while preserving and restoring natural teeth. Dr. Krishnan, a certified LANAP® protocol periodontist in Queens, can use the procedure to fight gingivitis as well. During the procedure, the specialized laser targets the infected pockets between the teeth and gums. Pulses of laser light are emitted removing bacteria and inflamed gum tissue without harming the surrounding healthy tissue.

The LANAP® procedure is widely used by expert periodontists all over the world, but not every Periodontist has the certification or knowledge that Dr. Krishnan has to use this laser protocol. Patients in the Queens, NY area who are nervous about traditional gum surgery which includes cutting and stitching can seek a free evaluation with Dr. Krishnan.

More Than a Quarter of U.S. Adults are Dishonest with Dentists about How Often They Floss Their Teeth

National survey reveals there’s room for improvement to educate Forest Hills, NY and Queens, NY residents on gum disease, which affects one in every two adults age 30 and over.

A new national survey released today reveals more than a quarter (27 percent) of U.S. adults admits they lie to their dentist about how often they floss their teeth. Additionally, more than one-third of Americans (36 percent) would rather do an unpleasant activity like cleaning the toilet (14 percent) over daily flossing. Along with brushing teeth twice a day and recieving a comprehensive periodontal evaluation each year, daily flossing is a critical component in preventing periodontal disease. The survey was conducted online in March by Harris Poll on behalf of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) among 2,021 U.S. adults and among the top 10 U.S. markets.

Commonly referred to as gum disease, periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease caused when bacteria in plaque below the gum line leads to swelling, irritation, and possibly receding gums and  tooth loss. Periodontal disease has been linked to many chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer. Despite its prevalence, periodontal disease is rarely discussed, resulting in a lack of urgency for the public to properly care for their gums.

“The survey’s findings clearly indicate that there’s  more work to be done when it comes to educating Americans about the importance of oral hygiene in maintaining healthy gums. There are more than 500 bacterial species that can be found in plaque, and brushing alone does not remove the bacteria that live below the gum line,” says Dr. Prabha Krishnan, periodontist of Forest Hills, NY. “As I tell my patients, periodontal disease is treatable and often reversible with proper and timely care. Working together, we can determine the best course of treatment based on my expertise and the patient’s oral health goals.”

The new survey also revealed a list of unpleasant activities Americans would choose over flossing, including washing a sink full of dirty dishes (18 percent) or waiting in a long check-out line (14 percent). Nearly one in ten U.S. adults would rather sit in gridlock traffic for an hour or do their taxes (9 percent each) than floss their teeth.

Healthiest Mouths By State, Region

Interestingly, the survey also revealed some regional distinctions in oral health care. Among the top 10 U.S. markets, Chicagoans are more likely than those in other regions to opt for an hour of gridlock traffic over daily flossing. However, New Yorkers are more likely than those in other metro areas to include flossing in their personal care routine.

Southern manners could also be at play. Those who live in Atlanta are more likely than those in other top metro regions to be honest with their dentists about their flossing routines. Atlantans also are more likely than those in other top metro regions to tell friends when they have something stuck in their teeth. On the contrary, those who live in D.C. are more likely than those in other top metro regions not to alert a friend of any potentially embarrassing lunch leftovers.

Love The Gums You’re With

When it comes to relationships, those with and without partners should take note. Three in five (60 percent) U.S. adults who have a partner say their partner’s oral health (e.g., teeth, gums, breath) has an effect on their intimacy, while over a third of Americans say a smile is the first thing they notice when meeting someone they are attracted to. In fact, more than two in five of those living in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Boston say a smile is the first thing they notice when meeting someone they are attracted to. This is especially true for women. So men, who are less likely to include oral care as a top priority, may want to up their game and schedule an annual periodontal visit.

Take Action

The AAP urges all Americans to Love the Gums You’re With by adopting simple improvements into their oral hygiene routines. To aid in the prevention of periodontal disease, the AAP recommends brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and receiving a comprehensive periodontal evaluation once a year.

Each patient is unique, and a dental professional can make a referral to a periodontist—a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease—for a specialized periodontal treatment plan.

Methodology

This survey was conducted online within the United States between March 20-24, 2015, among 2,021 adults ages 18 and older by Harris Poll, on behalf of American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) via its QuickQuery omnibus product, and from March 24-30, 2015, via its Major Market Query omnibus product among the following top 10 U.S. markets: New York City (n=212), Los Angeles (n=211), Chicago (n=212), Philadelphia (n=211), Dallas-Fort Worth (n=212), San Francisco (n=214), Boston (n=212), Washington, DC (n=213), Atlanta (n=210), and Houston (n=209). Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was used to adjust for respondents’ propensity to be online.

About Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria in the mouth that form plaque below the gum line. There are more than 500 bacterial species that can be found in plaque, and brushing alone does not remove the bacteria that live below the gum line. Poor oral hygiene is a primary cause of periodontal disease, but several other risk factors play a role in the development and progression of the disease including smoking, age, and genetics. While periodontal disease is mostly preventable and treatable, the early warning signs can be painless, leading to a lack of urgency in people to establish adequate oral hygiene habits or to discuss their periodontal health with a dental professional. With an appropriate diagnosis, the damage from periodontal disease is reversible in many cases.

About the American Academy of Periodontology

The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) is the professional organization for periodontists – specialists in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also dentistry’s experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. They receive three additional years of specialized training following dental school, and periodontics is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. The AAP has 8,200 members worldwide. For more information, visit perio.org.

Periodontist Prabha Krishnan Urges Patients On Certain Medications To Be On The Lookout For Gum Inflammation, Soreness Or Other Gum Disease Symptoms.

Forest Hills, NY — (ReleaseWire) — 06/12/2015 — Gum disease, an infection that attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth, can be caused by a number of factors. While many cases are seen in those with poor oral health habits, there are also a growing number of patients displaying a type of gum swelling referred to as medication related gingival hyperplasia.

Gum swelling or gingival overgrowth occurs when the gum tissue becomes so swollen that it begins to grow over the teeth. “This gingival overgrowth can increase the risk of periodontal disease as the environment it creates in a patient’s mouth is more likely to harbor bacteria,” says Dr. Krishnan. Bacteria in the gums, if not taken care of promptly, can damage the gums and surrounding tooth structures. Medication related gingival hyperplasia may not present with the usual signs of gum disease and may be difficult to notice due to the fact that the gums may not be tender, bleed easily or be discolored.

Medications we know of that can cause the overgrowth and swelling of gum tissue include:

– Blood pressure medications – nifedipine, verapamil, diltiazem and amlodipine
– Phenytoin, a seizure medication
– Cyclosporine, a drug often used to prevent transplant rejection

The good news is that practicing good oral hygiene and scheduling your oral health visits more frequently can help lower any chances of developing this condition as well as allowing any potential problems to be caught early. This is also why it’s very important to let your Dentist and Periodontist know of all medications you are taking.

NY Periodontist Prabha Krishnan cautions patients to pay attention to dental implants to avoid peri-implantitis

Forest Hills, NY — (ReleaseWire) — 05/07/2015 — Of the 30 million Americans missing teeth in one or both jaws, the number of patients turning to dental implants continues to increase. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, 3+ million currently have implants, and that number is growing by 500,000 per year. The dental implant procedure success rate and preserved smile outcome continue to make this a popular treatment choice for those missing key teeth.

However, with the rise in implants comes the growth in cases of peri-implantitis. Not unlike gum disease around natural teeth, peri-implantitis disease affects the gums and tissues around dental implants. Whether the cause be less than perfect oral hygiene habits or a fear to clean extensively around the implant itself, action must be taken as soon as any odd symptoms are noticed so that damage to the gums, damage to the bone, gum recession, loss of bone or potential loss of the implant itself does not occur.

Dr. Krishnan states, “We’ve been noticing an increase of incoming dental implant patients with gum disease symptoms such as inflammation and bleeding. Unfortunately, many people choose to wait instead of addressing the problem early, leading to more severe gum disease consequences and often the loss of the dental implant itself.” As soon as any symptoms are noticed, seeing an experienced Periodontist is crucial to the outcome. Gum disease has been linked to several very serious health conditions including heart disease, stroke as well as cancer.

Dr. Krishnan’s new patients are drawn to her cutting edge option for taking care of their peri-implantitis. In her Forest Hills, New York office location, she offers the LAPIP® method utilizing the PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser. This LAPIP® laser treatment protocol allows Dr. Krishnan to vaporize only the diseased gum cells allowing healthy cells to remain intact. Her patients love that there are no cuts, stitches and very little bleeding. A free laser treatment consultation is offered to discuss this cutting edge option, and Saturday appointments are available.

New York Periodontist Prabha Krishnan Raises Awareness During Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Staggering numbers of oral cancer diagnoses are a cause for both concern and action according to Dr. Prabha Krishnan in Queens, NY

Forest Hills, NY — (ReleaseWire) — 04/02/2015 — April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month and a good time to take a closer look at the devastating facts of this dreadful disease. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, approximately 45,750 people in the US will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer in 2015. While some still believe oral cancer is rare, alarming statistics show that a person dies from oral cancer every hour of every single day.

Oral cancer includes those cancers that occur in the mouth itself, in the very back of the mouth, and on the exterior lip of the mouth. The rate of occurrence of these cancers has continued to increase for 8 years in a row – a fact that has Dr. Prabha Krishnan concerned. Contrary to popular belief, oral cancer is not just seen in patients that smoke, use chewing tobacco or drink heavier amounts of alcohol, although the risk is greater in these cases. There are also unknown factors as well as the recently discovered connection between the human papilloma virus (HPV, specifically HPV16) and oral cancer.

The good news is that when discovered at early stages of development, oral cancers have a very promising 80 to 90 % survival rate. “This high survival rate is the reason we give our patients an oral cancer screening each year”, says Dr. Krishnan. New patients of Dr. Prabha Krishnan are always offered a complimentary visual screening at their first visit. The screening is quick, causes no discomfort and offers peace of mind.

During the visual part of the examination, Dr. Krishnan carefully looks for any abnormalities. Any red or white patches, mouth sores or lumps inside the mouth, including those that may be painless, may be cause for concern. Additional testing including a biopsy may be recommended to determine whether anything visible is cancerous.

About Dr. Prabha Krishnan
Dr. Prabha Krishnan is devoted to early discovery of oral cancer and understands the many positive impacts that can result from an early diagnosis including a potentially longer life span, reduction of treatment length or treatment types both of which affect quality of life. New patients are invited to take advantage of Dr. Krishnan’s “Care to Share” offer* which includes a periodontal consultation, a professional cleaning, an exam, x-rays as well as a free oral cancer screening for just $89. (*Offer pricing is valid in the absence of gum disease.) Queens NY Periodontist Prabha Krishnan urges patients to be seen immediately if experiencing any symptoms of gum disease

Forest Hills, NY — (ReleaseWire) — 02/24/2015 — Gum disease is an infection that attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. It is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Although it sadly affects 4 out of 5 people, many who have it do not know because it is often painless in its early stages.

Gum disease starts when bacteria that thrive on food acid form a sticky paste (plaque) at the base of the teeth. If this plaque is not removed with regular and correctly done brushing, flossing and professional dental cleanings, it hardens. The sensitive tissues of the gums become irritated leading to periodontal disease. The damage continues if left untreated resulting in deep decay, loose teeth and ultimately lost teeth. A few lost teeth affect the appearance of the smile and also affect the supporting structure of the surrounding teeth.

Most importantly though are the systemic health implications that result from gum disease. A 4-day, joint workshop between the American Academy of Periodontology and the European Federation of Periodontology, which was supported by an educational grant from Colgate Palmolive, noted that evidence indicates a connection between periodontitis and other systemic diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, chronic kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cognitive impairment, obesity, metabolic syndrome, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Numerous studies also show a link between gum disease and diabetes. Pregnant women with gum disease may risk preterm delivery of a low birth weight baby. Continuing research is taking place to examine the exact association between periodontitis and systemic diseases.

We do know with certainty that improved periodontal health contributes to better overall health. Those experiencing any signs of gum disease should seek the help of a qualified periodontist right away. Dr. Krishnan has treated patients with varying degrees of periodontal disease for over 20 years at her Forest Hills, NY office location. Forest Hills, NY — (ReleaseWire) — 01/23/2015 — As the excitement of the New Year begins to die down and fitness resolutions meet their match with day-to-day life, Dr. Prabha Krishnan reminds patients of the health benefits that can be seen from practicing exceptional oral health.

Treadmills, stairmasters and weights are all excellent choices when it comes to lowering your risk of stroke, heart disease and diabetes. There is, however, another weapon that many are unaware of – oral health care. Brushing, flossing, rinsing and not skipping any dental cleanings and exams can influence your health as much as that 30 minutes a day at the gym.

That’s why Forest Hills, New York Periodontist Prabha Krishnan is making every effort to empower her patients with oral health education and to encourage them to focus on their mouths in 2015. From snacking choices to daily decisions on how much time to spend cleaning the teeth, gums and tongue, she wants everyone to know the small differences that can have a big impact.

Dr. Krishnan has treated patients with varying degrees of periodontal disease for more than two decades. Some of these patients could have avoided the need to seek a specialist’s help had they known the importance of good oral hygiene. “Most patients that come in due to symptoms such as bleeding or inflamed gums, loose or shifting teeth or persistent bad breath don’t know what can happen if they leave these signs untreated,” says Dr. Krishnan. Numerous studies show a link between gum disease, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory tract disease, and preterm delivery of low birth weight babies.

Dr. Prabha Krishnan, LANAP® Certified Periodontist in Queens, NY Offers FDA Approved Gum Surgery Alternative for Periodontal Disease, Dental Implants, and Gingivitis

Patients in the Forest Hills, NY and Queens, NY area have a new, no downtime, and more convenient way to treat gum disease. LANAP® (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) also supports bone tissue regeneration, an important breakthrough in the treatment of periodontal disease.

Certified Queens periodontist Dr. Prabha Krishnan announces that the FDA approved Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) supports regeneration of bone tissue which is often a vital tool for treating periodontal disease. In most cases, the LANAP® protocol is used for the preservation and restoration of natural teeth and removing periodontal disease while the procedure acts as a gum surgery alternative. Dr. Krishnan, a certified LANAP® protocol periodontist in Queens, can use the procedure to fight gingivitis as well. Laser Assisted Periodontal Treatment is a good alternative treatment for teeth that may need to be extracted.

The LANAP® surgery has been performed for over a decade and gained FDA approval as a gum surgery alternative for teeth disease back in 2004. The LANAP® laser used by Queens periodontist Dr. Krishnan treats the periodontal pocket of infected or diseased gum tissue. This advanced surgical technique is not only a gum surgery alternative that is no cut, no sew, and no stitch, but it also uses the laser with minimal pain and bleeding to get rid of the periodontal disease leaving the healthy gum tissue intact.

By having a surgical procedure that doesn’t involve a scalpel, this quickens the healing process and minimizes the downtime that the patient will have after the procedure. The LANAP® procedure is a surgical method that efficiently replaces the use of a conventional scalpel during the periodontal surgery, and as mentioned above, requires no sutures whatsoever. This reduces swelling and also the bleeding following operation. Patients usually leave the session and continue their daily activities. This is also a main reason the LANAP® laser surgical treatment is considered a medical breakthrough as a gum surgery alternative or periodontal treatment for periodontal disease and dental implants.

The LANAP® procedure is widely used by expert periodontists all over the world, but few periodontists in Queens have the certification or knowledge that Dr. Krishnan has to use this laser protocol. This technological breakthrough is also available for those who experience chronic bad breath, suffer from bleeding gums, or are prone to periodontal disease. Many patients looking for second opinions or are nervous and afraid of gum surgery using a scalpel visit Dr. Krishnan with excellent results.
